FULL BIO Nils-Göran Olve
PhD ("Ekonomie doktor") at the Stockholm School of Economics in 1977 (dissertation: Multiobjective Budgetary Planning) where he had been a student from 1966. He then was a researcher and teacher there until 1986 ("docent" from 1980). Since 1995, he is adjunct professor in management control at Linköping University (Department of Computer Studies). He has also worked extensively in consulting and 1986-2003 was a partner in Cepro, a Stockholm consultancy which in 2000 became part of US-based The Concours Group.
Current research interest focuses on the management of IT and information, viewed as strategic resources for business and public organisations. In Linköping, he advises doctoral students and teaches future civil engineers. As a consultant, his recent work has concentrated on the use of Balanced Scorecards as a model for management control. This was the topic of a book first issued in Swedish in 1997 and in English by Wiley in 1999 (Olve, Roy & Wetter, Performance Drivers - a Practical Guide to Using the Balanced Scorecard), soon to be available in ten languages. A smaller book on the topic was issued in early 2002 by Capstone in UK. Most of his consulting concerns management control issues in large Swedish organisations and the role of controllers in implementing strategic change, and emphasizes the use of measures in influencing the actions of members in organisations, as exemplified through the design of budgetary control, or the current interest in performance measures and balanced scorecards, etc.
Another important facet of his work has been in management development. He has been involved in professional training programmes in Sweden for 25 years, and in the mid-nineties taught management control to a total of 300 civil servants in Swedish government ministries. In the eighties he was in charge of the International Teachers Programme for two years, and also headed management education courses in the PR of China.
Most of his publications concern management accounting, strategy, and the role of the controller. He is the author or co-author of more than 10 books and 20 published articles, not counting occasional contributions to various current debates. Performance Drivers was his second book with Wiley, the first being The Virtual Organization and Beyond - Discover Imaginary Systems (with Bo Hedberg et al., 1997). An article with his Linköping colleague Fredrik Nilsson was published in European Management Journal in August 2001: "Control Systems in Multibusiness Companies: From Performance Management to Strategic Management". Some examples of books in Swedish are:
"Five voices about Knowledge Management". With Mike Collins, Bo Hedberg et al. Stockholm: Cepro, 1998.
"IT as a strategic resource". With Thomas Falk. Malmö: Liber, 1996.
"Improved control with improved budget"; with Jan Bergstrand. Malmö: Liber. First published in 1981; currently in revised 4th ed., 1996.
Previous experiences include:
- Visiting professor with the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) in Brussels during 18 months in 1984-85
- Program director for annual full-time, one-year management programs produced for the Swedish Post by the Stockholm School of Economics in 1990-95
- Board member of the Swedish Opera College 1994-97, and chairman of its society of friends 1989-2002. From Spring 2001, he is the chairman of the "Friends of the Royal Opera, Stockholm" - an association of some 1,500 opera visitors. He has contributed many articles to the leading Scandinavian opera magazine Tidskriften Opera (formerly MusikDramatik) and served on its board for several years
