CHAPTER 5
Most authors who write about balanced scorecards believe in the concept to the extent that they forget to mention the challenges and troubles that some experience with it. As consultants and teachers we have heard of numerous implementations that didn't yield the expected results, and as researchers we have assessed why and how organizations use the concept in practice. In addition to our own hands-on experiences we also gained a deeper understanding of the concept in Scandinavian practice by organizing a theses competition among master students in the five Nordic countries on the theme of balanced scorecards. During three years, we read a hundred master theses and learnt how the concept was implemented in many organizations. It is clear that far from all succeed.
